Timothy Chooi, violin

Timothy Chooi, violin Hailed by Montreal’s La Presse as “The Miracle,” Canadian violinist Timothy Chooi captured the Bronze Medal at New Zealand’s 2015 Michael Hill International Violin Competition. A winner of Astral’s 2016 National Auditions, he is also a winner of a 2013 Vadim Repin International Scholarship, a recipient of the 2015 Sylva Gelber Award, and the Grand Prize winner of the 2010 Montreal Symphony Manulife Competition. This season, Mr. Chooi tours Canada w ith Jeunesses Musicale Canada and Prairie Debut, and performs as soloist with the Santa Barbara Symphony, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and appears in recital on the Winnipeg Recital Series and the Coast Recital Society series, among others. Recently, Mr. Chooi gave an extensive recital tour with Jeunesses Musicales Canada, performed with Pinchas Zukerman and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, recorded his debut album, and was featured at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival.

Mr. Chooi has appeared as soloist with most of the major orchestras in Canada, including the Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vancouver, Newfoundland, Victoria, Edmonton, Montreal, and Calgary symphony orchestras. He has also been soloist with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Costa Rica, Orchestre symphonique de jeunes de Montréal, Orford Music Academy Orchestra, Orchestra of the Americas, and the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra. He has performed under the batons of Pinchas Zukerman, Benjamin Zander, Ca rlos Miguel Prieto, Kent Nagano, and Yoav Talmi.

Mr. Chooi has appeared in recital for the Vancouver Recital Society series, Jeunesse Musicale, the Canadian National Arts Debut Series, Toronto ’ s Mooredale Concerts series, Festival Musique de Chambre Montréal, Germany’s Moritzburg Festival, Fundación Beethoven in Chile, the Orford Music Academy in Quebec, and many more. He maintains a close relationship with CBC Radio - Canada, and his performances are regularly broadcast across the world.

Mr. Chooi began studies at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, at the age of three. He is a graduate of the Mount Royal Conservatory, and recently received his undergraduate degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Ida Kavafian. He has also studied with Pinchas Zukerman and Patinka Kopec.
